You don’t know what you got til it’s gone. Or, at least, think it’s gone.
Someone recently asked me what I would miss the most if I lost everything I owned in a fire, and the first thing that came to mind was my mom’s wedding dress that she sewed for herself when she married my dad in 1977.
About an hour ago, I randomly decided to pull it out of it’s safe place in my house, but it wasn‘t there. I searched and searched, and eventually went into full panic mode when I could not find it anywhere.
Having rented out my house to several different sets of strangers over the past months, I tried to imagine the type of person that would steal nothing from someone but the most personally sacred object that they had tucked away in the most secret corner of their home. Who would do that?!
Finally, after an hour of fretting and a kind of grief for my mom beginning to creep in that I never could have predicted, I found it…in its actual secret hiding place and not (obviously) the secret hiding place where I had originally searched. It was very very super secret. And I was very very super relieved.
Now I am sitting in my living room in my mom’s wedding gown, eating Vietnamese food, watching comedy central, and sending my mom so much love…wherever she is
